Ralph was educated at Camden Grammar School and Fort Street School. His occupation was Traveller when he enlisted on 6 September 1915 at Warwick Farm and served in the 53th Battalion A.I.F. His next of kin was his mother Anne Wilson Pain of Cremorne.

Ralph departed Sydney on the 'Star of England' 8 March 1916 and arrived France via Egypt June 1916.

He had four brothers who served: Major John Henry Francis Pain (MC DSO), Hedley Claude Wilson Pain, Cedric R H Pain and Alan Richard Baden Pain.

Lance Corporal Ralph Oswald Cleveland PAIN was killed in action at Fromelles France on 19 Jul 1916 age 29.
